Back at SGN, Remembering Maurice Anderson

Bobbe Seymour here with today’s newsletter.

Well I’m spending more time at the store, probably as much as I’m physically able to. After being gone for a couple years, it’s taking some time to settle back in. So much has happened since I’ve been away including the loss of one of my best friends in the steel guitar business.

As I’m sure most of you know, Mr. Maurice Anderson is no longer with us. He was the father of my C6th playing. I was probably the father of his E9th playing. He also was an incredible non-pedal 12 string player. My friend since I was a little kid, I admired him tremendously. I’m sure anybody that knew him felt the same way.

Maurice and I had our problems after I left the MSA circle, but our problems were resolved and our childhood friendship continued until he left us.

There are so many good steel players and friends that I have lost over the years and of course, being a studio musician in Nashville, it hurts to lose anyone regardless of what instrument they played in the studio circle.

Duke Dumas, a guitar player in the studios here in Nashville and also known by most of you as a musician that Scotty uses on bass guitar for the big show on Labor Day. He made a visit to Steel Guitar Nashville the other day and said he had just lost a loved one and he had determined that he was going to visit and catch with everyone he hadn’t been keeping up with while they are still here to be visited.

I feel the same way about all you guys. I’m looking forward to reconnecting. I remember Johnny Paycheck saying at the end of one of our shows, “Thanks for coming to see me. You’re coming around is wonderful. That’s how I know I’m still around because you people are coming to see me.” I wish he was still here.

Don’t forget the big steel guitar workshop that we have planned for all you guys and gals. Here’s where to find out the details.

Workshops at Steel Guitar Nashville

This is Vic Lawson with today’s newsletter. We are putting together what we hope will turn into a series of workshops. We are in a unique position here in Nashville of having some of the top steel guitar players and teachers in the world living amongst us.

We feel this presents us with an opportunity to bring you together with professional players in workshops with a limited number of people in attendance and let you pick their brains about any steel guitar subject that interests you from tuning to tone to cabinet drop to recording to how to play licks or whatever you want to know.

We are planning the first workshop for Saturday, November 30th from 10AM to 3PM which includes a one hour lunch break. We want to keep the group small enough that everybody has a chance to get their questions answered and have a very intensive learning session.

Please give us your thoughts on the what kinds of workshops you’d like to see. It doesn’t have to be limited to steel guitar since we have access to lead guitar players, bass players, drummers, fiddlers, harmonica players, really any instrument you’ve ever heard on a country music recording.

If you want to venture out into the area of recording, we have access to one of the finest engineers to ever sit down behind a mixing board. We’re willing to go wherever your interest leads us.

For information on how to be a part of this workshop, please see www.steelguitar.net/workshop.html

Are you thinking about a new guitar for Christmas? Due to the high demand on new guitar shipments, they are six to eight weeks out. Order now with a deposit of $500 and get the color and configuration of your choice. Order by October 31st and we will give you free shipping within the 48 continental United States.

We are doing this to help you get your Christmas guitar on Christmas instead of in February. Make sense?

I’m looking forward to an interesting time weekend after next when I work with Daryle Singletary, Anita Cochran and Robyn Young at the Japan Country Gold Festival in Kumamoto, Japan. I hope to bring stories and pictures back with me. If there are going to be any steel players there, I hope they come up and introduce themselves.

Bobbe Seymour Returns

Surprise, surprise, after two years gone, I’m back for a temporary visit hoping to be back permanently soon. Medically I’ve had a rough ordeal. Still not allowed to drive or fly. I’m so glad to hear that so many of you have asked about me. I wondered about all of you myself. I’m looking forward to being in close touch again.

Naturally, I haven’t made any steel guitar shows, not even St. Louis. A lot has happened in the business in the last two years, some of it good, some of it horrible. I’m staying in touch closely to what’s happening in steel guitar through my store which I have four wonderful employees taking care of.

Until next time, your friend forever,
Bobbe Seymour
