Damir Besic, driving a tour bus in the snow, Ray Price is 85

Hello fellow players,

Damir Besic just came in. He is still a push pull lover too. I asked him about the weather in Croatia. He said it’s a lot cooler than it has been. I laughed and said, “Yes, I’ve been watching the news.”

As most of you know, Damir is a steel guitarist from Croatia. He has had a good run at life here in the United States over the past ten years. Damir was Americanized very fast. A couple years after he hit town, meaning Nashville, he had procured some very nice toys. Like a new Harley ’74 and a Cadillac Escalade, a girlfriend that had everybody in Nashville talking and he had made a lot of friends. I guess this is a lot of endorsement from the USA.

We had plenty of snow where I grew up in upper New York state. It was the kind of deep snow that started me off being a great bedroom player by forcing me to stay in and practice. Of course, snow banks were are lot of fun to play in when I was a little kid.

I’m sure most of you players out there also have a lot of snow, at least from near the Rockies. Monday, we were pretty well locked away from the store, but we are back banging at the computers and wanting to hear from any of you that can get through on the telephone.

I’m sure all of you are learning how to drive in this stuff if you don’t already know. It’s a lot of fun to look out the window at it, but not much fun to get out and drive in. This is especially true for you tour bus drivers who have no choice but to fight the road and slush and ice.

Sometimes while we were on the road traveling on the bus, we were better off than we would have been in a car or van. I felt sorry for anybody that got in our way. Even on dry pavement it’s hard to stop a bus when it gets going down the road at 65,000 pounds. It’s pretty near impossible to stop on snow.

I would like to congratulate Ray Price on his birthday. Ray is 85 years old. He seems to be just as mean as ever singing and traveling and doing all the gigs he can. As a singer, Ray’s style lent itself to steel guitar and Ray has been a great supporter of steel guitar having employed almost every steel guitarist in Nashville and Texas at one time or another.

Every one of Ray’s songs that his producers chose for him to record have been written for steel guitar it seems. Wonderful stuff and I wish Ray the best.

I’m going to give you some advise now that I find very pertinent. I have always heard to fight fire with fire but I remember the Fire Department using water. Don’t forget, a steel guitarist without a girlfriend has to carry his own amp. Finally, always borrow money from a pessimist. He won’t expect it back. I’m being serious now.
